My name is NOW Rebecca Friedlander, formerly Payne. I am Tanaina Athabascan from my mother's side & Cherokee from my father's side. I am a former Miss N.I.V.A. and former Miss Native American Oregon. I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. Following is a little history about myself and the activities I am involved with in the Native American Community of Portland. My Dancing History... I have been around the Pow Wow community since around 1995 with my family. On Mother’s Day in 1997 I came out onto the dance floor for the first time in full regalia dancing teen girls Fancy Shawl. Since then I have done a lot of traveling and performing throughout the Northwest. Not only do I perform Fancy Shawl but, on occasion I have danced women’s Traditional and Jingle Dress. I was Miss N.I.V.A. for the Northwest Indian Veterans Association Portland/Vancouver Chapter from October 2000 to December 2002. I gave up my crown December 31, 2002 at the NARA New Year's Eve Pow Wow in Portland, Oregon. Then on August 21st, 2004 I was crowned Miss Native American Oregon 2004-2005 at the Chinook Winds Casino Resort in Lincoln City, Oregon. With my title I gained over $2,000 in scholarship money that assisted me in going to college full-time. I gave up my title at the Annual Confederated Tribes of Siletz Pow Wow in Siletz, Oregon in August of 2005. My Personal History... I graduated from Cleveland High School in SE Portland, Class of 2001. Before starting my family I was a full-time student at Portland Community College working on my general college studies so that I may go on to Nursing. Then off it will be to Naturopathic School. However, everything has been put on hold for the time being. During my senior year in High School I was a part-time tutor for grade school students at the Portland Office of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians. I later worked the NAYA Family Center as the Receptionist/Admin Assistant, then later the Culture and Arts Coordinator before leaving to attend school full-time. November 2001 through January 2005 I was the Dance Instructor for the girls Dance Class at NAYA. Then January-June 2005 I taught both boys and girls ages 3 to6 how to dance at the Native American Montessori School in NE Portland. I am now married to Sgt. Cil xu sasqet (Chill-ahoe-a-susk) Friedlander of the U.S. Army. We were blessed with our first child, Cil xu sasqet Sammuel Friedlander, JR. on Thursday 20 July 2006, Cil xu sasqet means "Stands above the Clouds" in the Salish Language. He was born in Milwaukie, Oregon and came out 3 weeks early at 6lbs. 4oz. and 20 inches long. We now live in Germany, where my husband will be based for the next couple of years.
